Reacher will soon return with Season 4 of its much-loved series, and this time, they will adapt Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow. The Amazon Prime Video series became a much-loved watch with its first three seasons. So, as we wait for more details to be released, here’s what you can expect from the series.
What to expect from Reacher Season 4?
Gone Tomorrow starts off with ‘Reacher’ boarding a subway in NYC in the middle of the night. However, as he enters the carriage, he spots a woman, ‘Susan Mark’, who seems to be exhibiting the five tell-tale signs of a suicide bomber. ‘Reacher’ approaches ‘Susan’, only for her to fatally shoot herself, with the threat eliminated, NYPD feels no pressure to investigate further. Nonetheless. ‘Reacher’ harbours a sense of guilt for failing to help ‘Susan’ and takes this case into his own hands, but he is joined by NYPD Detective ‘Theresa Lee’ and Susan’s brother, ‘Jake’. Upon further investigation, they discovered that ‘Susan’ wasn’t an ordinary commuter but an employee at the Pentagon who fled Washington shortly before her death.

Turns out, she was caught up in a conspiracy involving Congressman ‘John Sansom’, who was previously involved in the Soviet-Afghan War. The public figure has been keeping some dangerous skeletons in the closet. Soon, ‘Reacher’ and the crew are led to ‘Lila’ and ‘Svetlana Hoth’. At first, the ‘Hoths’ introduce themselves as grieving family members of Soviet war victims. However, their made-up story is revealed to be just a facade for their true identities: Al Qaeda operatives. ‘Svetlana’ was the Mujahedin torturer of her own husband, ‘Grigori Hoth’, during the war, and had blackmailed ‘Susan’ by threatening her son, ‘Peter’, forcing her to steal classified Pentagon information, to ruin ‘John’s’ career.

Meet the new additions to Reacher Season 4
Reacher is known to introduce some new characters with every season, and Season 4 won’t be any different. Along with regulars Jay Baruchel as policeman, ‘Jacob Merrick’, Sydelle Noel as Detective, ‘Tamara Green’, Agnez Mo as ‘Lila Hoth’, Anggun as ‘Amisha Hoth’, and Kevin Corrigan as Detective, ‘Docherty’. Making their guest appearances in Season 4 are Kevin Weisman, who will essay the role of the journalist, ‘Russell Plum’, Marc Blucas as Congressman, ‘John Samson’, and Kathleen Robertson as the congressman’s wife, ‘Elsbeth Samson’.

Will there be a difference between the book and the series?
Reachers often take creative liberties while adapting the book for TV. In the Gone Tomorrow novel, ‘Lila’ and ‘Svetlana Hoths’ are Soviet soldiers who happen to be members of the Al Qaeda cell based in Afghanistan. However, in the upcoming adaptation, the name has been changed, and instead of Soviet citizens, ‘Lila’ has been described as “a young Indonesian woman who, along with her mother, Amisha Hoth, comes to Philly to track down Lila’s American biological father.” The ‘Hoths’ change was made to align with the actresses’ real-life nationalities, given that Mo is a Jakarta-born-and-raised artist who started out as a popular children’s singer at the age of six. Another actress joining the cast who was born in Jakarta is Indonesian-French singer, Anggun.

Reacher Season 4 to feature some sensitive, real-life themes
Considering the source material for Reacher Season 4, the production crew has to exercise extra caution, given that it is aligned with real-life incidents. ‘Susan Mark’s’ suicide bombing attempt in the late-night NYC subway train is reminiscent of the 2017 New York City Subway bombing, where “a pipe bomb partially detonated in a corridor between the Times Square-42nd Street and 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal subway stations adjoining the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.” The bomb in Gone Tomorrow might not have detonated, but the scene might possibly be triggering to audiences who experienced or witnessed the 2017 bombing.

Another sensitive arc in the Season is the portrayal of Al Qaeda, the group behind the September 11 attacks. In Gone Tomorrow, the big secrets that ‘Hoths’ were trying to get their hands on are evidence of Congressman, ‘John’ being involved with Osama bin Laden during the 1980s, who was covertly supporting the Mujahedin in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. The storyline is loosely similar to Operation Cyclone, which could once again trigger some people. Additionally, the ‘Hoths’ are portrayed as Al Qaeda terrorists from Afghanistan in the Gone Tomorrow book. However, they’re portrayed as Indonesian in the series.
Nonetheless, production still needs to be careful in how it incorporates the story’s terrorist element. For the unversed, Indonesia is home to 242.7 million Muslims, currently making it “the largest Muslim country by population today.” Any indication of ‘Lila’ and ‘Amisha’ being Al Qaeda terrorists would have to be done in a way that doesn’t stereotype Indonesia as a country that produces Islamic terrorists. While these sensitivities may be a challenge, they’re part and parcel of creating a long-running show without stagnating.
