A crew member setting up a stage where pop superstar Shakira is set to perform a free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been killed confirmed authorities and organisers

A technician working to set up the stage for singer Shakira’s massive free show in Brazil has been crushed to death.

The man, who has not yet been named, suffered severe injuries to his legs in a ‘lifting system’ a statement by Rio de Janeiro’s fire department confirmed. His co-workers were able to free him before the man was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The pop star is set to perform a huge concert on Saturday in the country’s capital. The gig is due to takr place on Copacabana beach.

Bonus Track, the concert organisers, said in a statement: “Unfortunately, the technician passed away in hospital.” Workers have been on site for weeks to assemble the stage. Shakira’s performance in Brazil comes after her Women No Longer Cry World Tour.

Witness Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos said: “Out of nowhere, we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was on the ground. “People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath. People rushed over to pull him out.”

The singing star has yet to discuss the tragedy. Earlier this year, fans were left terrified for the The Hips Don’t Lie songstress after the superstar took a tumble mid-song at a concert. Sge suffered a fall as she performed at a concert in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, on Saturday 7 February.

The Colombian singer was singing her hit song Si Te Vas as she ran across the stage. During the walk, she suddenly twisted her ankle and was sent crashing to the ground. Shakira fell on her elbow and took her microphone stand down with her.

In a matter of seconds, though, she was back on her feet and continued with the song. She added to the crowd: “Ouch, what a fall!” Her speedy recovery was met with a cheer from her guitarist.

The tour, which started last year and has been confirmed as the biggest female tour of the year in box office takings and ticket sales, comes a year after she released an album of the same name. The setlist includes a song known as Out of Your League, which is said to be a diss track about her ex, Gerard Piqué.
