New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency has registered a case to probe the recovery of 79 crude bombs in poll-bound West Bengal. The agency said the case was taken up on Sunday following a directive from the Union Home Ministry. It was originally registered at Uttar Kashipur police station in Bhangar division of Kolkata before being transferred to the NIA.

“The case pertains to recovery of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating materials by Kolkata police, which were being stored at a spot, thereby endangering human life and property,” an NIA spokesperson said.

The Election Commission earlier directed West Bengal Police to launch a drive against those involved in illegal manufacture of crude bombs and said such cases would be investigated by the NIA.

The directive followed recovery of explosives from the residence of Rafikul Islam, allegedly a Trinamool Congress worker, at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district ahead of the second phase of polling.

The Election Commission also warned senior police officers over maintaining law and order before the April 29 polling.

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was held on April 23, with the second phase scheduled for April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
