Haveri: Tension prevailed outside the district hospital here on Monday as the family members of a seven-year-old boy staged a protest, alleging medical negligence during a hernia surgery that reportedly left him in a coma.

The boy, a resident of Benakanakonda village in Ranebennur taluk, had been admitted to the district hospital for a hernia operation. According to the family, his condition deteriorated during the procedure due to alleged lapses on the part of the doctors, following which he slipped into a coma.

He has since been shifted to KMCRI in Hubballi, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Accusing the district hospital doctors of negligence, the family demanded that a case be registered against the surgeon who performed the operation. They also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and sought justice for the child. The protesters warned of intensifying their agitation if action was not taken and submitted a memorandum to the authorities.

Responding to the allegations, Dr Puttaraju on behalf of the hospital told reporters that an internal inquiry would be initiated.

“A committee will be formed to examine the case, including those who were part of the surgical team. The report will be submitted to the government. The panel will assess in all angles including whether the complications were normal or abnormal. Surgical procedures can involve various complications, and if any medical negligence is found, appropriate action will be initiated,” he assured.
