Rita Wilson Shares 2 Requests She Made To Husband Tom Hanks After Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis

It was in 2015 when Rita Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to undergo a double mastectomy and also a reconstructive surgery back in 2015, after her cancer was detected. Now, Rita shared that she had a very important message for her husband, Tom Hanks, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The Sleepless in Seattle star had married Tom Hanks back in 1988. She had written the 2019 song, Throw Me A Party after her diagnosis.

Rita Wilson had sat down for an interview with Demi Moore and spoke about the two requests she made to Tom Hanks after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Rita revealed that she had told Tom not to be sad for a long time if something had happened to her. She wanted him to celebrate her life. Rita Wilson had told Tom that she did not know what would happen to her. She hoped to be alive and had told her husband:

“But I said to Tom, I’m like, ‘Okay, if, if something happens and I go first, I just have two requests. And one is that you should be sad for a very, very long time. So I had a serious discussion with my husband that if anything happens, I wanted him to be super sad for a very long time and I’d also like a party, a celebration.”

Rita Wilson had earlier revealed that years ago, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she had many different thoughts. She was scared, anxious and started thinking about her own mortality. Rita revealed of telling Tom to throw a party for her and said:

“The second one was throw me a party. I want it to be a celebration of life. I want it to be about people telling stories and joy and, remembering me in that way. And I think people, a lot of people want that, you know? I think there’s room for that.”

Rita Wilson has been cancer-free for more than 10 years

It was on March 31, 2025, when Rita completed 10 years of being cancer-free. She had spoken about it being a celebration for her and that she has always been very grateful for the same. Rita had thanked her doctors, friends and family. Rita had spoken about not talking much related to the same and said:

“To my friends, to my family. The gratitude is overwhelming. Didn’t always feel this way. And you know that, anybody who’s going through [it, or] who’s survived knows that it’s an up and down, like, hamster wheel. But then you get to this point. I think it’s important to celebrate good news. I am thinking of anybody out there who might be going through some difficulties. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. Anyways, God bless you all.”
