AJ Foyt Racing rookie Caio Collet went fastest on the last day of the two-day Open Test for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Brazilian’s flying lap happened during the morning session, receiving a massive tow that propelled his #4 Chevrolet to 226.381mph. He was one of only two drivers to break the 226mph mark, with two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden nailing a 226.223mph flying lap – also in the morning session – in his #2 Team Penske Chevrolet.

Jack Harvey continued his theme of being the fastest among the no-tow speeds with an encore performance from Day 1 and ascended with an unassisted 221.122mph lap in the #24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet. Unfortunately, he suffered a mechanical issue during the afternoon session with roughly 90 minutes remaining to put a premature end to his test.

Newgarden went on to lead a very busy and traffic-filled afternoon session with a quick lap of 225.617mph.

“This is just the first step towards coming back here next month and trying to win another Indianapolis 500,” said Newgarden, 35.

“It’s the greatest race in the world and we have a good base to come back with. It was a pretty clean day for the Shell Fuel Rewards Chevy team and it’s always nice to see your number towards the top of the pylon. Team Chevy brought good power once again. It is a long month to get to the race but we are in a good place leaving the test.”

Four-time and defending IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou, who is also the defending race winner of the Indy 500, was second-fastest in the afternoon, posting a best lap of 225.272mph in the #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Conor Daly, who led the first day of testing, was third in the afternoon – fourth overall – after putting his #23 Chevrolet to a quick lap of 225.215mph. Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward was fourth in the session – fifth overall – with a 225.109mph lap.

The day was planned to begin at 10am ET, but the start was pushed back due to rain in the morning. On-track activity was able to commence at 11:15am with the morning’s two-hour session.

There was also a one-hour session for Katherine Legge, in the #11 HMD Motorsports with AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, to get through her veteran refresher, completing two phases during it before successfully finishing it up during the all-skate running in the afternoon.

The only significant interruption happened during the afternoon when a fox was seen on the track in Turn 1 as two-time Indy 500 Takuma Sato was approaching the corner in the #75 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda. Fortunately, the fox made a clean getaway.
