Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence following her shock arrest that took place in March when she was seen “driving erratically” across Los Angeles

Britney Spears has been officially charged with DUI. The pop star, 44, was arrested on 5 March for driving “under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol” and taken to Ventura County Main Jail, north west of Los Angeles. At the time of her arrest, a mysterious substance was found in her car.

Now, the star has been formally charged with a single misdemeanour count of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said on Thursday evening.

The criminal complaint does not specify what kind of alcohol or drugs, or what amount, Spears is accused of having used. The Mirror has contacted Britney’s representatives for comment.

At the time of her arrest, authorities said that Spears appeared to be impaired and took a series of field sobriety tests but was released on bail the following day, whilst an investigation subsequently took place and was presented to prosecutors on March 23.

Just after the news unfolded in March, her manager told The Mirror: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully, this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

A month after her DUI arrest, the …Baby One More Time singer checked herself into rehab following claims that she had hit “rock bottom.” According to Us Weekly, “help and support” is coming in the form of a rehab stint. The publication stated that a representative of Spears confirmed that she had checked herself into a facility so that she could be treated for substance abuse. The Mirror reached out to her reps for comment, who also confirmed that the singer “voluntarily” went to rehab.

A source also told TMZ that Spears’ rehab decision was made with her upcoming court date in mind. The Oops… I Did It Again singer is due in court on 4 May regarding her DUI charge. The source said that Spears, who has previously struggled with alcohol and drugs such as ADHD medication Adderall, “knows strategically” that going to rehab “will look good in front of the judge” as it will prove she is “taking it seriously”.

They added that she “hit rock bottom” after the arrest, but her sons, Sean, 20, and Jayden, 19, have been “strongly supportive” of her decision to go to rehab. The boys recently spent time with their mother on a boat and took to social media to share their happy memories of their time with the star.

Her eldest son, Sean, also made a huge statement by changing his last name on his Instagram account. Though his name is Sean Preston Federline, his page now shows him as Sean P Spears.
