‘Should I Marry A Murderer’, Meet Caroline Muirhead, Got Her Fiance Arrested, Where Is She Now?

True crime fans have a delightfully unsettling experience waiting for them in the form of Netflix’s Should I Marry a Murderer? The docuseries, inspired by the journey of Dr Caroline Muirhead, follows her as she acts as a whistleblower against her own fiancé, Alexander McKellar. Who is the braveheart, Dr Caroline Muirhead, who helped her fiancé get caught?

Dr Caroline Muirhead is a Scottish forensic pathologist whose life changed forever after a fateful right swipe. Dating apps have become a constant in today’s world, with people often turning to them to find their matches. The case was no different for Caroline. However, little did she know that what she had entered, thinking he was her “one,” was actually hiding a secret that would change the course of her life forever. Caroline matched with Highland gamekeeper, Alexander ‘Sandy’ McKellar, on a dating app in September 2020. 

Caroline and Alexander immediately felt a spark, and after a whirlwind romance, they fell deeply in love and were soon engaged. Caroline Muirhead described feeling “accepted, wanted, seen” by her new partner, blissfully unaware of his dark past. However, a couple of months into their relationship, Caroline asked her then-fiancé, Alexander McKellar, a question that blew her fairytale life wide open. She asked Alexander whether there was anything in his past that could affect their future. It was then that he dropped a devastating bombshell, confessing to his involvement in a fatal, covered-up hit-and-run.

What did Dr Caroline Muirhead’s then-fiancé, Alexander McKellar, do?

For the unversed, it was in September 2017, when Alexander McKellar and his twin brother, Robert McKellar, were driving under the influence along the A82 in Argyll, Scotland, at a local hotel with a shooting party. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, their vehicle struck the 63-year-old cyclist, Tony Parsons, who tragically passed away. Tony was a retired Royal Navy officer, grandfather, and cancer survivor, who was cycling a 100-mile route in aid of a prostate cancer charity at the time.

What made things worse was that, rather than calling someone for help, the McKellar brothers went to great lengths to hide what they had done, including swapping vehicles, hiding his bike and burying the body in a bog used for dead animals on the 9,000-acre Auch Estate, where they lived and worked. For three years, Parsons’ family had no idea what had happened to him.

How did Dr Caroline Muirhead get Alexander McKellar arrested?

After the confession, Dr Caroline Muirhead faced the ultimate dilemma: whether to remain loyal to the man she was deeply in love with or risk her happily-ever-after and expose the truth. However, she eventually chose to do the right thing for Tony Parson and his family and went undercover to get more information about the murder from Alexander McKellar. Once she had enough information, she tipped off Scotland Police, working as a covert witness over several gruelling months to gather evidence that led to the brothers’ arrest in December 2020. Alexander was eventually sentenced to 12 years in prison for culpable homicide and attempting to pervert the course of justice, while his brother, Robert, received a five-year sentence in 2023.

After successfully bringing her former fiancé, Alexander McKellar, to justice, Dr Caroline Muirhead naturally stayed out of the public eye to process the immense trauma of the ordeal. However, now with Should I Marry a Murderer?, she is all set to reclaim her narrative. In the new Netflix series, she tells her side of the story for the very first time. She shares deeply personal mobile phone footage, her own anguished reflections, and details the profound mental toll of living a double life to expose a killer. She was quoted as saying:

“To remain in love, you have to keep this secret that you know is gonna destroy you. But if you reveal it, then you destroy everything. I mean, what would you do?”
