Some home buyers dream of nothing more than a blank canvas and the opportunity to create a home exactly as they wish. Others are happy to be drawn into someone else’s vision, and step into a new, or newish, home designed for modern family life.
They may not be heritage yet, but they’re sure to leave an impression for the long term. Here are some of our favourites.
22 Kent Court, Toorak VIC
It doesn’t take long to look at the striking angles inside and outside Cave House and see how it was inspired by origami. Parts of the ceiling, walls and even a window seat look like they have been gently folded. This knockout Toorak home was designed by McBride Charles Ryan and won the Residential Architecture Award in the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter Awards 2006. The al fresco dining area enclosed in a baton-like frame adds further visual interest.
55 Chatsworth Road, Prahran VIC
The calm, brick exterior of this Prahran four-bedder opens up to a gently curved and backlit kitchen and Venetian plaster walls and ceilings. Designed by architect Adam Kane, the home’s curves continue through the pool area, the skylight-topped stairwell and the bathrooms. Floor-to-ceiling glass in the living space offers an outlook over the courtyard.
94 Speight Street, Thornbury VIC
Breeze blocks are back in style, including in award-worthy projects, and have been used to create a delightful entrance to this new Thornbury home. The warm kitchen and bright living space lead out to a barbecue area topped by more breeze blocks. The circular bath under a circular skylight is a neat detail.
19 Magnolia Road, Ivanhoe VIC
It’s not a total rebuild, but this Ivanhoe family home has had a striking contemporary extension at the rear. The floor-to-ceiling glass in the living room is topped by a large triangular window that looks stylish when viewed from the garden, and brings plenty of light inside. There’s a trampoline and basketball hoop for the kids – or the big kids.
