Tom Holland has shared that he isn’t sure his career would have “blossomed” if he were still drinking alochol after quitting in 2022 following a Dry January challenge
Tom Holland has shared how he thinks his “obsession” with alcohol was affecting his career before he quit drinking in 2022. The Spider-Man actor opened up about his sobriety journey at a padel tennis tournament sponsored by his non-alcoholic beer brand Bero.
29-year-old Tom stopped drinking in early 2022 after taking part in a Dry January challenge. He explained at the time that the challenge helped him realise that he had become “obsessed” with “the idea of having a drink”, and, as such, chose to remove it from his life. He added that quitting alcohol was “the best thing I’ve ever done”.

On Thursday (30 April), USA Today asked him if his life would have happened the way it did if he had not become sober. He said: “I’ve been so lucky in the last four years that my career has really blossomed in a really lovely way, and I really love what’s happening and what I have to come in the future. And I don’t know how much of that would’ve come to fruition had I still been drinking.”
He added that he felt alcohol was “really getting in the way of my professional life” and that it made how “stressful” acting could be worse.
Tom continued: “Since getting rid of the booze and feeling more like myself and waking up clear-headed every day and fresh to start the day, I just feel so much more confident in myself as who I am as a person.”
Tom, who is set to return to screens with Spider-Man: Brand New Day after two years away from acting, has previously opened up about his decision to stop drinking. He told the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast: “I didn’t one day wake up and say, ‘I’m giving up drinking’.
“I just, like many Brits, had had a very, very boozy December. [It was] Christmas time, I was on vacation, I was drinking a lot and I’ve always been able to drink a lot.”
After that, he decided to do Dry January, but struggled. He admitted that all he could think about was drinking and that when he realised that, it “really scared” him. So he decided to turn Dry January into Dry February, hoping that if he could do two months then he would have proven he did not have a problem.
But he was still struggling, especially as drinking was harming his ability to socialise. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling.”
Later, he said: “I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?’”
Tom decided to hold off drinking until his birthday in June, but found that by then he was “happiest I’ve ever been in my life” and no longer needed to drink. He had “better mental clarity”, felt “healthier” and was no longer “set off” by things going wrong.
