HYDERABAD: Senior IPS officer B. Sumathi on Friday assumed charge as commissioner of police, Malkajgiri Commissionerate, becoming the first woman to hold the post. She was accorded a warm welcome by senior police officials and staff.

Addressing the media, Sumathi thanked the government for the appointment, calling it both an honour and a responsibility. “Delivering transparent, efficient and citizen‑centric policing is my top priority, strengthened with tech‑driven systems,” she said.

Highlighting the growing challenge of cybercrime, Sumathi said the department would adopt a process‑oriented, result‑driven approach to ensure swift justice for victims. She announced plans to utilise AI‑based tools such as TG QUEST to strengthen surveillance and crime detection, alongside awareness programmes for the public.

On drug abuse, she termed it a serious societal concern and pledged focused efforts on prevention, detection and investigation, supported by technology‑based monitoring systems. She also stressed the importance of traffic management, citing rising vehicular density, and promised measures to streamline traffic and improve commuter safety.

She noted Malkajgiri’s reputation as a relatively peaceful region and assured that maintaining law and order would remain her key focus. “I will work with my team to ensure effective policing. Advanced technology will aid investigations and help curb crime,” she added.

Sumathi thanked the government and the DGP for the opportunity, assuring that her team would work in line with government guidelines to deliver effective policing.
