Former The Athletic reporter, Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel are currently under intense online scrutiny. It all started after Page Six released exclusive photos on April 7, 2026, showing the duo holding hands and hugging at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. The matter escalated after their past interviews got revisited and their statements were interpreted differently. Mike and Dianna’s respective families also got dragged into the mess. Amid that, a former NFL quarterback, Robert Griffin III, analysed the situation and brought a new angle to it, citing controversial figures like Sherrone Moore and Ime Udoka.

Robert Griffin III compared Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini case’s coverage with Sherrone Moore and Ime Udoka

The Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel case escalated from being a mere affair scandal to gaining national interest. Former NFL star, Robert Griffin III also presented his two cents regarding the issue. Robert expressed frustration that the controversy was not being covered with the same intent as seen in the case of Sherrone Moore and Ime Udoka. For context, Sherrone Moore was fired from the University of Michigan head coach role after they found credible evidence of his inappropriate relationship with his executive assistant. As for Ime Udoka, he was suspended for the entire 2022-23 NBA season by the Boston Celtics for violating team policies. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Robert wrote:

“This Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel story is getting crazier and crazier. Every day it’s something new. Why isn’t it being covered with the same vigor as Ime Udoka or Sherrone Moore by the media? Heck, even Klay Thompson and Meg the Stallion are getting no-holds-barred coverage.”

Robert Griffin III’s comment on Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel prompted ‘racial element’ talks

Dan Dakich addressed Robert’s comments regarding Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel on his podcast, Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich, in a recent episode. Dan argued that Robert was unnecessarily inserting a “racial element” into the scandal. He questioned if Robert’s stance was more of an “anti-ESPN thing” or a genuine concern about race, given the differing circumstances of each case (for instance, Ime Udoka’s violation of team policy with a staffer and Mike Vrabel’s personal life). Thus, he questioned whether Robert Griffin III’s comparison of the Vrabel-Russini situation to other high-profile coaching scandals is a valid critique or an unnecessary racialised insertion. He stated:

“There is a racial element to it with the examples he brought up. For this situation, talking about Udoka or Sherrone Moore, both of those situations involved actual employees of the same institution. This is something completely different when you look at Vrabel, and you look at Russini. Because we’ve not seen ESPN or a lot of these other big journalists cover this story.”

Although Dak felt that Robert had gone too far with the comparisons, he also admitted that the vigour of media coverage regarding the Mike, Dianna case was indeed lower than that of the general public. According to Dak, it was the internet sleuths who were providing more updates on the controversy than the media outlets. He stated:

“I get where he’s coming from from that perspective. That nuance has done little to quiet the conversation. If anything, it has deepened it. The gap between public curiosity and editorial caution is now part of the story itself. For now, the loudest updates continue to come from social media, where speculation moves faster than verification and interest shows no sign of fading.”
