Guwahati: Amid predictions of a landslide victory for the ruling BJP in exit polls, Congress leader and Jorhat candidate Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday claimed that a “silent wave” is building in favour of the Opposition in Assam, which, he said, is not reflected in the exit polls.
Asserting that people have silently voted for the Opposition, Gogoi told reporters that this time voters have cast their ballots based on their “conscience”, especially women voters. He alleged that instead of being influenced by government schemes, many women considered issues such as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family wealth and overall governance before voting.
Pointing to the Supreme Court of India’s criticism of the Chief Minister over his alleged use of inappropriate language, Gogoi said it has exposed the government’s attitude.
He also claimed that while those in power have grown in wealth and influence, ordinary people in Assam continue to struggle.
Stating that inflation has hit common people hard, Gogoi raised concerns about press freedom, alleging that journalists in Assam are unable to speak freely under the BJP government. He also dismissed exit polls, saying they have failed to capture the real mood of the people.
“There is an undercurrent in Assam which these agencies have not been able to see. The final results will reflect what the people truly want,” he said.
Looking ahead, Gogoi said that the Assam Pradesh Congress and other Opposition parties will soon meet to discuss steps to ensure free and fair counting of votes on June 4.
He added that a joint committee will be formed to plan the next course of action and to work on fulfilling the promises made in the Opposition’s manifesto within 100 days if they come to power.
Meanwhile, just two days ahead of the declaration of results, several senior Congress leaders have arrived in Guwahati for a crucial party meeting. Among those present are Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, and party leaders Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel.
