The store is consistently ranked among NYC’s top pizzerias, but after trying Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala 2022 pizza order for myself, I had 1 complaint
When my partner announced we were jetting off to New York as an anniversary treat, my first instinct was to hunt down places to eat. I’m deadly serious when I say that within 48 hours of discovering the trip, I’d built my own Google Map with 72 points of interest… 34 of them being restaurants.
Some may consider that over the top for a four-day break, but my logic was straightforward: if we got peckish while exploring various neighbourhoods, we’d have plenty of brilliant food choices at our disposal. Following discussions about our travel plans with friends and family, particular recommendations emerged time and again, with Joe’s Pizza amongst them.
Joe’s was already on my radar, especially following its cameo in Spider-Man 2 where Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) was sacked from his pizza delivery job for being too slow with orders.
Countless celebrities are devotees of Joe’s Pizza too, including Kim Kardashian. She famously purchased 10 boxes from Joe’s after the 2022 Met Gala when she wore the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress alongside Pete Davidson.
Kim donned the Jean Louis gown that Marilyn wore in 1962 for JFK’s 45th birthday. The sheer dress shocked America at the time as it created the impression Marilyn was nude and that her skin was covered in diamonds. The pizza marked the end of her gruelling three-week, carb-free and sugar-free diet that she endured to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s legendary dress. So if the pizza got Kim Kardashian’s seal of approval, it surely had to be worth trying, right?
The evening before, I had witnessed an enormous queue stretching from the Joe’s Pizza branch near Times Square. So, when I clocked just a few people inside the Fulton Street outlet, I rushed straight in.
Within moments, I was ordering, and the worker behind the counter seized a slice and slid it into the oven for a swift reheat. This left me with a positive impression of the establishment – they could have simply served me a lukewarm slice, but they made the effort to guarantee it was scorching hot.
The pizza slice, which was larger than my head, cost me just $4.50. Given the price of other food I’d eaten during my visit, this felt like an absolute bargain.
The moment the pizza was in my grasp, I observed it wasn’t drowning in oil or grease. Rather, it was beautifully crispy with a substantial layer of cheese on top.
The ratio between sauce and cheese was spot on, and it was evident the dough was fresh. Additionally, they didn’t cut corners on ingredients.
My sole complaint was that the pizza needed more seasoning beyond the tomato base.
Admittedly, you could suggest that I made a rookie error by not requesting a slice with toppings – and you’d likely be correct. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that a dash of herbs might have elevated this pizza to another level. All things considered, Joe’s Pizza earns a solid 7/10 from me. On a brutally freezing day with wind chill plummeting to -21c, it was exactly what was needed to keep warm and fuel the more than 22,000 steps we clocked up throughout the day.
