Nalgonda: About 800 quintals of maize were reduced to ashes after unidentified persons allegedly set fire to the stock at Patharlapadu village in Chinthakani mandal of Khammam district on Sunday.
According to police, the maize stock was stored at a corner of the Markfed maize procurement centre when the fire broke out in the evening. Fanned by strong winds, the flames spread rapidly, causing extensive damage. The fire also spread to a nearby private farm.
Fire tenders from Khammam rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after considerable effort. The loss is estimated at around Rs 20 lakh.
Based on a complaint lodged by Markfed officials, Chinthakani police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the incident.
