Kolkata: Nine workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), including an election agent, skipped summons issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the alleged hostage-taking of seven judicial officers in Malda district.
The central agency had asked the individuals to appear at Kaliachak police station around noon on Sunday for questioning. The summons were served late Saturday night. Among those called were Abdul Rahman, election agent of Sujapur TMC candidate Sabina Yasmin, Mohammad Sariul Islam, Kaliachak block no. 1 president of the party, Kamal Hossain, a member of Kaliachak Panchayat Samiti no. 1, and local leader Haji Qutubuddin.
Rahman also serves as Karmadhakshya (Forest & Land) in the TMC-run Malda Zilla Parishad. However, none of the nine appeared before the agency on the scheduled date.
Reacting to the development, Yasmin questioned the timing of the summons, alleging political motives. “The NIA can call anyone for questioning, but why just before vote counting and why my election agent?” she asked.
She further claimed that such “dirty tricks” would not impact the party’s prospects, expressing confidence that Mamata Banerjee would return as Chief Minister. The party has sought fresh dates from the agency.
