33 gates nearly complete; project worth ₹54 crore to benefit 7.5 lakh farmers across four districts

News Report:
Hosapete, May 3: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced that the newly installed crest gates at the Tungabhadra Dam will be inaugurated on May 15, with work on replacing all 33 gates nearing completion.

After inspecting the ongoing works at the dam, Shivakumar said officials have been instructed to finish the remaining tasks by May 7 to ensure readiness for the inauguration. He noted that the execution was carried out under expert technical guidance, especially following damage to one of the crest gates in August 2024.

“The entire country was watching this work. Ensuring proper execution was our priority,” he said, adding that the project could serve as a model for similar infrastructure works nationwide.

The dam currently holds 10.50 TMC of water and is expected to reach its full capacity of 44 TMC within two months, provided rainfall improves. So far, ₹54 crore has been spent on the project, with costs shared between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in a 64:34 ratio.

Highlighting the importance of the development, Shivakumar said the project would benefit around 7.5 lakh farmers across four districts. He also announced that the chains associated with the gates would be replaced as a precautionary measure, with the task assigned to a Chennai-based organisation. The first batch of chains is expected to arrive soon.

“These gates are designed to function without issues for the next 50 years,” he said, while acknowledging the cooperation of farmers who adapted their cropping patterns during the project period.
