The legendary singer of the band, Santana, Alex Ligertwood passed away at the age of 79. While the cause of his death has not been revealed, his wife recently shared a statement and recalled his final days before his demise. For those who do not know, Alex was a popular singer, who is widely recognised for songs like Winning, Hold On, All I Ever Wanted and more.
Alex Ligertwood passed away peacefully in his sleep
On May 2, 2026, Alex Ligertwood’s wife, Shawn Brogan took to her Facebook handle to confirm the death of her husband. It is worth noting that she did not reveal when and how the legendary singer passed away. However, Shawn revealed that Alex died peacefully in his sleep with his dog beside him. A part of her note can be read as:
“It’s with great sadness and heartache to announce the passing of my sweet dear Alex Ligertwood, my husband of 25 years, we knew each other for 36 years. Alex passed peacefully in his sleep with his doggy Bobo by his side yesterday. Alex was loved by so many. If you knew him, you loved him.”

Further, Shawn Brogan recalled the last few days of the singer, Alex Ligertwood. She stated that the singer had inspired several people. According to her, Alex Ligertwood also performed his last show just two weeks before his demise. She concluded the note by expressing her love for the singer and wished the best for him. Her note said:
“He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul. His favorite thing in life was to make music, sing and to share his gift with us. He performed his last show just two weeks ago. I’m grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end. I will always love you, my sweet Alex. Rest in peace. Soar and sing with the angels, my love. Please keep me & his family, Lynn & Stewart Locke, Alex, Jenny, Kali, Merci & Marilo in your prayers.”

Alex Ligertwood’s music journey
According to a recent report by The Mirror, Alex Ligertwood was born in Scotland in December 1946. It was worth noting that even though Alex did not receive any formal training in music, he was raised in a musical family as his father played multiple instruments as a hobby. He also sang in school choirs. Reportedly, Alex was very young when he started playing the guitar.

He began his music journey by being a part of local brands like The Meridians, The Kwintones and The Senate. Later, he performed for the Jeff Beck Group. Apart from this, over the years, he also joined Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express and worked with Average White Band. However, Alex Ligertwood rose to fame with the band, Santana. The band was started in 1966, but Alex was a part of it around 1979 and 1994.

Apart from being an important part of the songs, All I Ever Wanted, You Know That I Love You, Winning and Hold On, Alex Ligertwood was also a writer. Over his long career, he co-wrote several songs like Brightest Star, E Papa Re, Make Somebody Happy and more. It is worth noting that Alex’s last album, Outside The Box came in 2019. Reportedly, it was produced by David Garfield.
