However, Carl kept everything else related to his life away from public view. In 1973, Dolly released a single, Jolene, and Carl was an inspiration for the song.
Addressing her husband’s quiet life, Dolly once told PEOPLE in an interview in 2016 that Dean preferred to stay only around her. During another conversation with Parade magazine in 2015, Parton claimed that Carl never had any issues about the popularity she was getting with her work. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2020, Dolly said that she has a lot of respect for her husband’s privacy, as she said:
“It’s just not who he is. He’s like a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace and he’s right about that. I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him, and I’ve always tried to keep him out of the limelight as much as I can. He said, ‘I didn’t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.’”

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean’s love story dates back to 1964. The meeting happened after Dolly arrived in Nashville and went to the Wishy Washy Laundromat. Parton recalled that she was going towards her home when she met Carl, who first called her, and she responded by waving at him. The couple started dating shortly after their first meeting in 1964 and got engaged two years later in 1966.

Following their engagement, Dolly and Carl tied the knot in 1966. It was a private ceremony at the Ringgold Baptist Church. Dolly’s mother, Avie Lee Owens, also attended the occasion. Parton recalled that her mother brought a bible with a dress. Parton and Dean also had to get back to work a day after the wedding. Dolly released many singles that were inspired by Carl, and the pair renewed their vows in 2016. However, Dean passed away in May 2025, and Dolly shared the heartbreaking news on social media.
Back in March 2025, Dolly Parton opened up on the reasons behind not having children when she spoke to PEOPLE. While she previously claimed in another conversation that the decision was letting her do some extra hard work, Dolly said:
“I didn’t have children because I believed that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine, so I could do things like Imagination Library because if I hadn’t had the freedom to work, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done. I wouldn’t be in a position to do all of the things I’m doing now.”
