Hyderabad: A gang allegedly involved in poaching wild animals such as deer, peacocks, rabbits, quail and doves was busted in a joint operation by the Golconda task force and forest department. Six hunters were arrested, and property worth Rs 8 lakh, including four airguns, a licensed rifle with 20 live rounds, a Scorpio car and mobile phones, was seized.
Task force additional DCP Ande Srinivasa Rao said the accused were illegally hunting in Shadnagar and Makthal forest areas, recording videos of their acts on the mobile phone of one of their associates, Mohd Muzzaffar Hussain. The arrested men were identified as Muzzaffar Hussain alias Guddu, Mir Ahmed Amir, Abdullah Bin Sahain, Saud Bin Mohd Balab, Masood Bin Mohd and K. Shekar, who guided them to animal locations.
Police said Amir, a professional shooter representing the Telangana Rifle Association, was found in possession of a licensed 30.06 sporting rifle. The gang habitually hunted deer, peacocks and other animals, storing the meat at Muzzaffar’s house. Videos retrieved from his phone showed incidents including the shooting of a peacock in January, a wild pig in March, and multiple deer in Makthal forests last year and in April 2025.
The accused have been handed over to the forest range officer, Hyderabad East Range, for further action. A case has been registered under sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
