Section Of Congress Wants To Back Vijay

Chennai: Rebellion was brewing in the AIADMK on late Tuesday when a section of the party leaders wanted the party to support the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) of Vijay that has run short of about 10 MLAs in forming government, even as the TVK was seeking help from other parties, including the Congress.

Though the AIADMK has emerged as the third biggest party with 47 seats in its kitty, the party leaders feel that the AIADMK could remain relevant politically as part of the ruling dispensation by rushing to the aid of the TVK that was looking for allies who would help add to its tally of 108 seats and enable the party cross the crucial 118-seat halfway mark in the 234-seat House.

By becoming part of the ruling coalition, led by the TVK, the AIADMK could reinvent itself as a party having access to power, even if it was to just extend outside support that would keep the ruling party going, the leaders feel.

Since AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami was averse to the idea of his party playing second fiddle to a fledgling outfit, he was refusing to consider the proposal mooted by some senior leaders. Also the leaders feared a split in its ranks since K.A. Sengottiyan, a top honcho in the TVK who had a very long innings in the AIADMK before defecting, was reportedly trying to poach some MLAs.

The AIADMK leaders feel that since the TVK will anyway manage to cobble up the numbers required to form government; they themselves could volunteer to bail out the party by extending support and facilitating the formation of the government. In the event of the AIADMK not supporting the TVK officially, there could be defections or some MLAs defying the high command and joining the ruling coalition.
