TIRUPATI: The demise of an elderly woman at a house in Cherlopalli under Tirupati Rural police station limits, which initially looked like a natural death, turned out to be a murder following investigations.
T. Lokeshwari (62) had been living alone in the house she owned at Cherlopalli. When she did not wake up till late on May 2, her relatives entered the house and found her lying motionless.
“At first, it appeared to be a natural death. But injuries on her body raised suspicion,” Superintendent of Police L. Subba Rayudu said. Disclosing details to media on Tuesday, he said the disappearance of her tenants, Mahalakshmi and Reddappa, pointed to foul play.
“Their sudden absence after the death became a key clue in the investigation,” the SP said. Based on a complaint from relatives, police registered a case and began a probe.
The SP said they formed special teams under the supervision of additional SP A. Srinivasulu. “We examined the case from all angles and tracked the movements of the suspects using field inputs and technical evidence”, Subba Rayudu said.
Police traced Mahalakshmi and Reddappa near the MLC Kalyana Mandapam at Kallur on May 4 evening and took them into custody. During questioning, they confessed to the crime. “They killed her while she had been asleep with the intention of stealing money and jewellery”, the SP revealed.
The accused took away ₹50,000 cash and ornaments. “When they tried to sell the jewellery, they realised it to be of gilt,” Subba Rayudu said. Police caught the accused while they had been trying to flee to Vijayawada. Cash of ₹14,000 and the gilt jewellery has been recovered from them.
The SP advised the elderly living alone to remain cautious. He urged house owners to verify the details of tenants before giving their premises on rent. He said in case they find anything suspicious, they can call 112.
