Witnesses appearing today
Today the royal commission is hearing from 12 witnesses sharing their lived experience of antisemitism.
This includes the Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal, journalist and ex-editor of The Age Michael Gawenda, and food critic and restaurant reviewer for The Age, Dani Valent.
Lynda Ben-Menashe, the president of the National Council of Jewish Women of Australia, is also appearing.
We’ll also hear from some anonymous witnesses when the hearing kicks off at 10am.
Day four of hearings to begin at 10am
Good morning, and welcome to our live coverage of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.
It’s day four of the first block of hearings, which is focusing on defining antisemitism, lived experiences of antisemitism and the impact on Jewish Australians, and how to assess the prevalence of antisemitism in institutions.
Yesterday we heard from more than a dozen witnesses, many of whom appeared anonymously, to share their experiences of antisemitism in schools and community groups.
Parents spoke about their children being confronted with Nazi salutes and racist slurs, and a teacher from Tasmania described the growth of “casual” antisemitism in schools since the October 7 attack by Hamas.
Outside the Sydney hearing venue a man wearing a T-shirt with a swastika was moved on by police, and later charged with behaving in an offensive manner in a public place and displaying a prohibited Nazi symbol in a public place. He will appear before Manly Local Court on May 27.
