Was Key Glock Shot Dead In South Memphis? Fact-Checking The Death Buzz And All About The Rapper

Rumours surrounding popular American rapper and songwriter Key Glock have set social media abuzz after multiple posts by unverified accounts claimed that he has been shot dead. The claims spread like wildfire across X, Reddit, Facebook, and YouTube, leaving fans worried about the rapper’s condition.

While there is currently no official confirmation that Key Glock has died, the news has stirred a viral panic on the internet. Fans are worried that even though the rapper may be alive, something must have happened to him for such a hoax to ensue. 

Was Key Glock gunned down in South Memphis?

The rumours about Key Glock’s passing appear to have originated from unverified social media profiles and a reshared video. An unverified YouTube video, captioned “BREAKING: Rapper Key Glock G*nned Down In South Memphis”, stirred the buzz online that soon made its way to other social media platforms as well. The report said:

“Key Glock gunned down in South Memphis. Multiple shots. The streets already know who did it. Somebody had been watching his patterns, knew his roots, knew exactly where to find the last living pillar of Paperroot Empire, and they came prepared.”

The report further mentioned that Key Glock’s killers were the same gang that killed rapper Adolph Rovert Thornton Jr., aka Young Dolph, in November 2021 in Memphis. Key Glock himself allegedly had mentioned that he, too, might face a similar fate. The report claimed:

“The same people who killed Young Dolph have their fingerprints all over this…Key Glock knew this was coming. He said it himself after Dolph died. ‘Everybody has a date. You can’t run from it.’ He stayed in South Memphis. Kept his cousin’s name alive. They came for him anyway.”

Soon after, screenshots and clips from the video flooded X and Facebook. “Damn, they killed Key Glock ik it’s finna go down in Memphis, rest up,” one viral post read. Another user reacted in disbelief, writing, “Yo. Ain’t no way Key Glock is dead bro.” But many fans quickly questioned the authenticity of the claims, especially due to the complete absence of police confirmation or mainstream news coverage.

As of now, there is no credible evidence suggesting that Key Glock has died. With the panic spreading online, several users pointed out major inconsistencies in the story. Many noted that no credible media outlets had reported the alleged shooting, and there was no video evidence or official police statement backing the claims. 

Others outright dismissed the rumours as fake. “He ain’t dead,” one person commented, while another added, “He’s alive! I had to triple check.” Several fans also pointed toward the rapper’s recent social media activity, including a recent IG Story posted less than 24 hours ago, as proof that the viral claims were false.

Who is Key Glock?

The American rapper, born Markeyvius LaShun Cathey, became popular with his stage name, Key Glock, and is one of Memphis rap’s biggest names. Born and raised in Memphis, Key Glock has built a strong reputation in modern hip-hop with projects like Yellow Tape, Glockoma 2, and tracks including Ambition for Cash. However, his rise to fame came after a difficult childhood marked by instability and family struggles.

Glock was reportedly just 20 months old when his mother, Tameika Cathey, was sent to prison, and she remained incarcerated for 15 years. While there is limited information about his father, some reports suggest he, too, has been in and out of jail over the years. As a result, Glock was largely raised without his parents’ company, growing up under the care of his grandmother and aunt.

In his interviews, Key Glock has often credited world-famous rappers like Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane as his major inspirations. Regarding his rapping career, he has also spoken highly of his late cousin, Young Dolph, whom he calls his inspiration and mentor. It was in November 2021 that Dolph was assassinated in broad daylight at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies on Airways Boulevard in Memphis, when he was inside the bakery purchasing for his mother. An autopsy later revealed that the rapper suffered 22 gunshot wounds to his back, chin, neck, and arms.
