Savannah Guthrie sparked speculation after leaving her role on the Today Show early on Wednesday as her elderly mum Nancy remains missing

Savannah Guthrie abruptly left the Today Show mid filming on Wednesday as the hunt for her missing mum continues. The co-host, who recently returned to her role as her mum Nancy’s disappearance remains a mystery, left the show after 90 minutes.

Her swift exit was confirmed by co-host Craig Melvin, who told viewers she was done for the day. He said”: “Savannah had to leave a little early today.”

But in a move to try to reassure concerned fans, he added: “She’ll be right back tomorrow, though.” There was no further explanation, leaving viewers wondering if there had been a development in her missing mum’s case.

However, a source has since told Page Six that her exit was “for some sort of appointment, and her exit had nothing to do with her mom”.

Viewers had remained hopeful it could have been a breakthrough, though. Among those commenting on her mid-show exit, was Newsnation’s contributor and retired FBI agent, Jennifer Coffindaffer, who wrote on Twitter/X: “Savannah Guthrie left the @TODAYshow set this morning after only 90 minutes.

“Everytime she unexpectedly leaves the show, it gives me hope that there may be a break in the case. I guess it could just mean Charlie had to leave school early with the sniffles and Savannah wanted to be with him, but I always hope it means a break. #NancyGuthrie”

Nancy, 84, has been missing since January 84. Police believe she was kidnapped from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and continue the search for any perpetrators.

Savannah initially took a few months off from her day job as the search went on. But weeks after making a desperate plea on social media, she returned to her role on April 6.

At the time, she told viewers it was “good to be home”. And she went on: “Ready or not, let’s do the news.”

During her absence, Savannah’s co-stars wore yellow ribbons of support on their lapels. In the states, a TV special on the disappearance of Nancy aired May 6 on NewsNation. In it, experts explored the possibilities behind what happened to the pensioner.

To date, there appears to be no viable clues or suspects. The Newsnation special aired more than a week after a man’s trial date was set for creating fake ransom notes concerning Nancy’s kidnapping.

Journalist Brian Entin, who has closely followed the case throughouth, brought together three criminal profiles for the special. They looked into the possible profile of the suspect who was found on Nancy Guthrie’s front door security camera.

Despite the footage being shown worldwide, the man, who has not been named, was seen attempting to break into Nancy’s Tucson home while tearing the Nest camera off the front door. He was seen wearing a ski mask, gloves and a backpack. He also appeared to have a weapon on him.

Dr. Gary Brucato told the show: “What you’re dealing with is somebody with some cruel, sadistic, scheming personality, and you don’t develop that kind of personality overnight; you tend to have a long history of being that way…they tend to be cool under pressure like this, but what tends to make them not cool is when there are slights to this ego.”
