Crimes Against Women, Children Continue to Worry Telangana

Hyderabad: Even as India recorded a decline in crimes against women in 2024, Telangana and Hyderabad continued to report higher numbers of offences against women and children, according to the latest NCRB report.

The NCRB data showed that India registered over 4.41 lakh cases of crimes against women in 2024, lower than the 4.48 lakh cases reported in 2023, reflecting a decline of around 1.5 per cent. However, domestic violence, sexual harassment, kidnapping and POCSO-related offences continue to remain major concerns nationwide.

Among the various categories, cruelty by husband or relatives remained the single largest crime against women in the country, accounting for more than 1.2 lakh cases. It was followed by kidnapping and abduction of women, assault with intent to outrage modesty and rape cases.

Telangana continued to remain among the states reporting high crimes against women.

NCRB-linked state data showed that Telangana had recorded 23,678 cases of crimes against women in 2023, registering an increase over 22,066 cases reported in 2022. The state also reported one of the highest crime rates against women among southern states.

Hyderabad too figured prominently among metropolitan cities reporting crimes against women registereing 3255 cases in the year year 2024.

The city recorded 3,822 cases in 2023, placing it among the top metros after Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Jaipur. The figures reflected a rise from 3,145 cases reported in 2022 and 3,050 in 2021.

Domestic violence continued to dominate the crime pattern in Telangana as well. Out of the total crimes against women registered in the state, as many as 10,518 cases were related to cruelty by husband or relatives. Another 5,024 cases involved assault on women with intent to outrage modesty.

In Hyderabad alone, 1,743 cases were registered under cruelty by husband or relatives, while 751 cases involved assault on women. Hyderabad ranked among the top metropolitan cities in the country in offences related to assault on women.

The NCRB report also highlighted growing concerns over crimes against children across India.

Nationally, crimes against children increased by nearly 6 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year. Kidnapping, sexual assault under the POCSO Act and online exploitation formed a major share of these offences.

Telangana continued to report high numbers of POCSO and child-related offences. NCRB data showed that the state registered 6767 cases related to crime against children in 2024, involving rape, sexual assault and harassment of minors. Hyderabad accounted for 920 case which rose from 645 and 692 in 2022 and 2023.

Recent cases by Hyderabad police have revealed instances of minors being targeted through Instagram reels, messaging applications etc.
