VENICE — As Venice High capped its spring practice session on Thursday night, May 7, at Powell-Davis Stadium, at least one thing became perfectly clear.

Rising junior quarterback Noah Patton, a transfer from IMG Academy, and returning rising junior offensive machine Tyree Mannings Jr. are going to give opposing defenses lots of headaches in 2026.

Head coach John Peacock kept the intrasquad scrimmage short and simple. No game officials, no scoreboard, no rosters, and certainly no fireworks or videos on the Venice High Jumbotron.

Peacock decided his team would be better served by avoiding the traditional spring exhibition game this time around.

“You get 19 days in the spring, and you spend five of those getting ready to play a team in a meaningless game,” Peacock said. “We figured we’d use those five days just trying to get better.

“My thought process was to focus on Venice and not have to worry about playing a spring game. We just want to focus on Venice getting better.”

Mannings led Venice with 84 receptions for 1,429 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore. He also ran the ball 19 times for 193 yards and one score.

He and Patton seemed to be already in sync.

“We have a good chemistry right now, but we still have to build on that,” Mannings said. “It’s all about getting better each and every day. It starts right here.”

Peacock and his coaching staff plan to nurture that relationship before the start of the 2026 season.

The Venice passing attack will also get a boost from rising junior wide receiver Jayvian Hoffmann, a transfer from Booker High, who will provide Patton with another target.

“It’s going to force people to man up and play Tyree honest,” Peacock said.

Dominic Marino, in his second season as the Venice quarterbacks coach, has been impressed by Patton this spring.

“Noah is showing great effort,” Marino said. “He’s learning a new offense in stride. It’s always a process trying to build a team around a new quarterback. I’m proud of him.”

Entering his fourth season as a placekicker and punter for Venice, 6-foot-4, 235-pound James Reynolds likes the vibes he’s getting from the 2026 squad.

“We have that young energy,” Reynolds said. “I’m excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Peacock, in his 19th season as head coach, has guided Venice to three state championships. Venice is always a threat to go deep in the playoffs. Venice made it to the Class 7A Final Four last season before losing 31-26 to Lake Mary in a state semifinal game.

“We’re excited,” Peacock said. “We think we have a good group. Our team is definitely hungry.”
