Showrunner Meg Marinis opens up on the exit of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver

Showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy, Meg Marinis, recently appeared for an interview with Variety on May 7, 2026. Addressing the exit of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, Meg said that the decision was made right after the New Year. Creator Shonda Rhimes was additionally involved in the departure process for the characters. Marinis said that she spoke to Shonda about the steps they can take to do it in the right way. Marinis described the exit as a painful decision and even appreciated Kevin McKidd’s work on the series as the director of some episodes. She further stated:

“When we were faced with needing to exit [someone], it made the most sense for whether their characters were in their lives. It felt like it was time. After the ups and downs of their relationship this season, I knew I wanted them to exit together. I thought they finally deserved to be happy, and it became clear to me that maybe they can’t be happy in Seattle – and that’s where the decision was made.”

Meg Marinis clarified that the exit decision was a result of the storyline, and it is something that is happening frequently in the entertainment industry. Meg revealed that she and Shonda also spoke to McKidd and Raver about the exit. However, Marinis also stated that the exit of the characters does not mean that they will not appear again on the show.

As mentioned, the exit of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver from Grey’s Anatomy was first revealed in March 2026. According to Deadline, the duo was informed about the exit around a month ago. While speaking to the outlet at that time, creator Shonda Rhimes said that Kevin and Kim’s appearances left an “indelible mark” on the series, bringing a lot of talent, nuance, and heart to the characters. Shonda opened up on the fact that the characters were getting a proper farewell, as she said:

“Over the years, we have had the privileged of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”

On the other hand, the budget cut reports for the show have been believed to be the major reason behind Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver’s exit. The actors or the producers have not responded to the claim so far. A report by Deadline in February 2026 stated that the budget for Grey’s Anatomy would be reduced, which might lead to a smaller number of episodes and a reduction in the number of cast members featured on the show. During her conversation with Variety, Meg Marinis admitted that creative decisions are taken due to budget restrictions. She also said:

“Some of our characters, even if they aren’t still married, have children together, so it’s very tricky how to exit characters and what the impact is going to be to the other. It is pretty tough to maintain a large ensemble, especially for 22 years, in today’s financial climate in the industry. If it were up to me solely, I wouldn’t be writing anybody off ever, but I have to see where the story goes and follow the story.”
