Pose star Dominique Jackson has channelled Miranda Priestly in a viral parody to deliver a vital history lesson on trans rights, explaining why gay rights are and will always be intertwined with trans liberation.
Pose star Dominique Jackson has delivered a history lesson on how gay rights will always be intertwined with trans liberation, via a parody of the iconic Devil Wears Prada ‘cerulean sweater’ monologue.
In the original monologue, Anne Hathaway‘s character Andy Sachs receives a lecture about the fashion industry from imposing editor-in-chief Meryl Streep.
In the video, the Pose star replaces Meryl in a collaboration with the Gender Liberation Movement (GLM) for a powerful message on trans rights, detailing how the fight for trans rights impacts all queer people.
When an assistant scoffs at two shirts, one reading ‘Hands off my ‘mones’ and the other reading ‘Protect the dolls‘, Dominique asks what’s funny. He replies: “Both of the shirts look exactly the same to me. And, you know, it’s always the same thing: bathrooms, sports, hormones, you know. I’m just learning this gender stuff and-”.

Dominique’s read begins, as the other editors in the room, played by trans actors Lío Mehiel and Yên Sen, and trans influencer Kay Poyer, stand speechless.
“This gender stuff? Oh, I see. You don’t think this has anything to do with you,” Dominique says. “You go on your little vacations to Fire Island or Puerto Vallarta and you select — I don’t know — some gender-bending bikini top to show off the muscles you got on T, and to prove to the world that you’re this liberated gay with marriage and rights.
“And none of this transgender stuff has anything to do with you. But what you don’t realise is that this ‘gender stuff’ is not just bathrooms or hormones or sports. It’s actually attacks on all of us.”
“You stood by and called it ‘complicated,’” Dominique continues in her read. “The millions of dollars and countless jobs created for marriage equality are nowhere to be found in the fight for trans rights. But your conscience is wiped clean because of the occasional $50 donation to a doll’s GoFundMe.”
Dominique then goes on to list several ways in which trans and LGBTQ+ rights are being targeted in the US, before concluding the read, saying: “It’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve built a life that makes you exempt from the attacks, when in fact, your very own gay rights were secured by trans people on the front lines, like the ones in this very room, by paying attention to this ‘gender stuff.’”
The skit was used to announce the launch of GLM’s Gender Liberation Is For Every/Body campaign. The non-profit organisation aims to raise $250,000 (£183,000) by the end of Pride Month to continue its fight for trans rights in the US.
“Gender Liberation Movement is holding the line: we’re building power in the streets, in media, and for affirming families of trans & non binary kids,” the video’s Instagram caption reads. “From now through Pride season, we’re raising 250k to make the work sustainable for the long haul.”
