The white-beaked dolphin who stranded near Egmond aan Zee in the Netherlands on Sunday evening (May 3th), has died.

The dolphin, named Albi, died on Monday at the rescue center of SOS Dolfijn after his condition suddenly became worse. Earlier that day, caregivers had shared hopeful news that dolphin had started swimming on his own again. He received constant support in the rehabilitation pool.

Since arriving at the rescue center in Anna Paulowna, the dolphin had been cared for day and night by volunteers and specialists. At first, several people were needed to keep him supported in the water because he was too weak to swim independently.

According to SOS Dolfijn, his death came as a shock to the rescue team and volunteers.

It is still not clear what caused the dolphin’s illness. Earlier blood tests did not show any major problems. Albi’s body will now be taken to Utrecht University for examination to help researchers understand why he stranded and died.

The dolphin was one of the few white-beaked dolphins to strand alive in the Netherlands in recent years.
