It is already known that the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board declined to provide water tankers for the shooting of SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi in the city. The decision comes against the backdrop of a severe summer water crisis currently affecting several urban neighbourhoods. Water board officials reportedly reiterated that during periods of extreme scarcity, domestic consumption must remain the priority over commercial film requirements.
Varanasi to relocate to Uttar Pradesh?
Director Rajamouli is currently scouting for a new location to film critical underwater sequences. Both Varanasi and Prayagraj are under serious consideration by the production team. These cities offer a more reliable water supply for the complex technical requirements of the shoot. The film crew is expected to shift operations to one of these northern locations soon, provided the necessary clearances are obtained from the respective authorities, in order to avoid further delays.
However, this is not the first time the production has faced logistical hurdles. Earlier, the Varanasi team had to reorganize its schedule by moving to Shamshabad, where it repurposed a massive set originally built for Jr NTR’s upcoming film Devara. These local adjustments became necessary after regional instability in the Middle East forced the cancellation of several planned international schedules.
Varanasi gaining traction abroad
Not just in India, the epic-scale film is also gaining traction overseas. In April, the project made a significant impact on the international stage during a promotional tour in Mexico. The event marked a milestone in the film’s ambitious global marketing campaign.
The producers are currently organizing more international events to maintain anticipation ahead of the grand theatrical release. The upcoming film, slated for release on April 7, 2027, features an exciting collaboration between Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The duo will appear together in a major musical sequence composed by MM Keeravani, with renowned choreographer Bosco Martis supervising the dance number.
