The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions on May 13, 2026, and it brought one of America’s most infamous crime cases back to the headlines. The court overturned Alex’s convictions of murdering his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, and son, Paul, along with ordering a new trial after releasing evidence of jury tampering and misconduct by a court clerk.

As this took place recently, several questions were raised again, regarding the case, including one of the most asked questions, which is, ‘Why did Alex Murdaugh kill his family’ in the first place? To mention, while Alex first lied about his whereabouts during the time when the murder took place, later he accepted lying about the same and said that he did this from a state of being paranoid, due to the influence of drugs, at that time. However, he continued to mention that he didn’t kill Margaret and Paul. But why did prosecutors believe that he killed his wife and son? Let’s have a look at the theories that are out there.

Why did the prosecutors think that Alex Murdaugh killed his wife, Margaret and son, Paul?

Even though the court overturned Alex’s convictions of murdering his wife and son, he’s not being released anytime soon. For the unversed, Alex Murdaugh, who was one of the well-known lawyers from South Carolina’s most influential legal family, is still imprisoned, and that is due to the financial crimes that he committed, including fraud and money laundering. He was initially sentenced to two consecutive life sentences after he was found guilty of allegedly shooting his wife and son near the property’s dog kennels in June 2021. While he denied that he killed them, there had been several theories from the prosecutors that revealed what could be the motive behind the same.

While it was mentioned throughout the trials, it was never confirmed. As it’s believed by the prosecutors, during the time the murders took place, Alex was facing financial pressure, and it was intensifying the scrutiny on his activities tied to his alleged theft, and to distract people from the same, he allegedly committed the crime.

Alex was already facing pressure and scrutiny simultaneously for years for the alleged misconduct, and the prosecutors argued that behind his killing of his family, there could be a motive for him to gain sympathy and cause a delay in the investigations that might have taken place during that time. As mentioned, he first lied about where he was when the killings took place, but he later admitted that he lied, while still mentioning that he was not the one to kill his wife and his son.

Alex is still serving 40 years in federal prison and 27 years in state prison simultaneously. It was in 2023, after a six-week trial, that he was first convicted. After his initial conviction, his defence team filed for an appeal, accusing court clerk Rebecca “Becky Hill” of improperly influencing jurors. It was last December when Rebecca was found guilty. And as the court now overturns Alex’s murder convictions, it was revealed that Rebecca ‘egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility and his defence, and therefore triggering the presumption of prejudice, which the State was unable to rebut’, and thus the court remanded for a new trial consistent.
