Oscar winner Marion Cotillard is taking Cannes by storm – as she opens up on hew film Karma, directed by her expartner
French Oscar winner and global fashion icon Marion Cotillard turned heads on the Cannes red carpet on Friday night oozing effortless French elegance – and brought her rarely-seen teenage son with her. The porcelain-skinned Parisien star, looking at least a decade younger than her 50 years, was at the French film event of the year to promote her new film Karma, directed by her ex-partner Guillame Canet, who she split from last June after almost 20 years – and with whom she also shares a daughter, Louise, 9. . Currently thought to be single, she walked the red carpet with eldest child Marcel, 15, who hovered over his mum as they attended the premiere, both in black – Cotillard giving classic French Riviera chic with a twist, in an all-leather Chanel gown, while her teenage son looked distinctly dapper in a tuxedo and bow tie.
Speaking on Saturday after the film’s premiere, which received a six-minute standing ovation from critics, to the Mirror and other press, Cotillard’s ex revealed that Karma was born out of his mission of developing a story that he could write specifically for Cotillard in mind. And Cotillard said her former partner approached her with several ideas for a film before providing her with a full script. She said, ‘’They were all actually good. I reacted to everything. But it was this particular idea that took shape and seemed very vibrant to me. We naturally realized it was the right topic.” She added, “I followed the creative process from the very beginning. There were times of doubt and questioning, but when I read the first script, which wasn’t the final script, I had a strong emotional reaction, and he knows when I have that reaction, I know we’re going in the right direction.” Cotillard – who achieved global acclaim for her incredible portrayal of Édith Piaf in the 2007 biopic La Vie en Rose, previously explained that raising her two children meant she favoured projects that kept her in her native country. . “Guillaume wrote the movie for me. I had a few years raising my kids and not finding anything strong enough for me to go away from them. He said, ‘I really want to write a movie for you with a very, very strong character, with something different from what you did before,'” Cotillard explained.
“He came up with this character whose past comes back and turns her life into something that is totally different from what she’s been living for years,” she added. “He wrote a very, very strong and twisted script for me. She’s a woman who slowly reveals herself, who thinks she’s weak but discovers she’s not.” The taut psychological thriller follows Jeanne (Cotillard), a woman whose life is upended and she is forced to flee to Spain, after becoming the prime suspect in the sudden disappearance of her young godson. Desperate to hide, she returns to the French countryside and seeks refuge within the brutal, cloistered religious cult she escaped a decade prior, and is reluctantly taken back in by the sect’s manipulative leader – before swiftly realising that where she is staying is just as dangerous as the authorities she is trying to escape from, As well as bagging an Academy Award for her stunning turn as Edith Piaf, Cotillard became a Hollywood favourite following star turns in the likes of Christopher Nolan hits Inception (2010) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), as well as Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011).
