Kate Garraway opened up on her dating life to former ITV colleague Piers Morgan, where she revealed a very surprising detail about her love life
Kate Garraway fans might be surprised to find out she dated a rockstar before finding love and settling down with her late husband, Derek Draper. Kate made the revelation appearing on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories as she opened up on her past relationships before her marriage.
The 50-year-old joined her former ITV colleague for his talk show, where she spoke at length about Derek’s devastating battle with long-Covid before he died. The Good Morning Britain star explained how Derek was the only boyfriend not to break up with her as she shared: “I’ve always been dumped. I have never ended a relationship.”
Piers then probed: “How many times are you talking?”, before Kate admitted the number stood “in double figures”. She added: “See you if you had known the bar was set so low you would have had a double crack, wouldn’t you?”

Piers went on to ask Kate about the contents of her 2021 memoir, The Power of Hope, in which she cryptically wrote that she had dated an actor.
When Piers asked, Kate said: “No, a performer.” Continuing to dig, Piers went on: “A singer? A famous one?” Kate revealed that her mystery man is a “musician of sorts” and is now famous, but refused to unveil his identity.
During the same interview, Kate opened up on the devastating effect Covid had on her husband, Derek, and family’s life after he was initially taken to hospital in 2020.
At the time, he was placed in a medically induced coma to give his body time to recover fromt he virus, but he did not wake up until several months later with his body destroyed from the disease.
Kate explained: “Covid has devastated him, from the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his heart, his nervous system.”
Derek died in January 2024 at the age of 56 after suffering a cardiac arrest just a month before. The heart attack caused him more complications after the detrimental effects Covid had on his body.
Kate confirmed her husband’s death with an Instagram post at the time, writing: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.
Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.”
Kate continued: “I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.
“Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”
