Sam Houston State University football star, William Davis passed away at the age of 22. The news came as a shock. William Davis reportedly passed away on May 16, 2026. The reason for his demise has not been released yet. However, a recent report revealed the apparent reason for his death, which has not been backed by any authentic source, as of now. William Davis reportedly was transferred to Sam Houston State University after he spent the 2025 season at West Virginia.

While the official cause of William Davis’ death has not been released, sources revealed that he was back at home in Virginia recently. Unverified reports are also claiming that the reason for his death is suicide; no official confirmation has been given of the same claim. A spokesperson from HBCU recently confirmed the passing of a 22-year-old football star to TMZ.

Before being transferred to Sam Houston State University in January 2026, William Davis was reportedly seen in one match. In the match, he was seen as the Mountaineer for Rich Rodriguez’s season in the opening win against Robert Morris. The spokesperson recently revealed to TMZ that it’s sad news that Will Davis, a student-athlete, passed away at such a young age. The statement could be read as:
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of SHSU student-athlete Will Davis.”
The school’s head football coach, Phil Longo, also released a statement, confirming William Davis’ passing, stating that he was a member of the Bearkat football family, and touched the lives of everyone he knew. He also mentioned that Will was someone who was an upbeat, positive and passionate individual, who will be missed.
According to the reports, the program planned to honour the 22-year-old talented individual. However, no official announcement about the same has been released yet. William Davis, before stepping into FBS, was an influential figure at Virginia Union, one of the top Division II HBCU programs. Will played for Virginia Union from 2022 through 2024, and recorded 56 tackles, two interceptions, one sack and 11.5 tackles for loss. William Davis, one of the many players who were transferred to Division I. After leaving Virginia Union, Davis transferred to West Virginia. He reportedly joined the Bearkats for spring workouts in Huntsville and had been preparing for a fresh new start.
After his assosiating to SHSU, Will Davis expressed his excitement about the same. According to TMZ, he expressed his wish to find a home away from his home, where he could find a great fit for himself to align with a strong culture. Speaking about his background, he was from South Boston, Virginia. Apart from honing his skills in football, he was also a student of entrepreneurial management, which he earned from VUU, just two years back in 2022.
