Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue has shared that she suffers from anxiety and self-doubt but thinks that ‘a healthy amount’ of worry is ‘good’ for her as she vows to keep performing until she’s 80
Kylie Minogue has revealed that she suffers from anxiety and self doubt – but thinks that it could be a good thing. The Can’t Get You Out Of My Head singer has also said that, despite her self-doubt, she wants to keep performing until she’s 80-years-old.
Kylie, 57, is known as the “princess of pop” and has spent almost 40 years in the music industry. To celebrate, Netflix have made a documentary about her life, covering everything from her cancer battle to her romances with the two big loves of her life, INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan.
Despite winning several BRIT Awards, Grammys and the status of global icon, she explained that she still suffers from “anxiety”. But she insisted that didn’t think that was a bad thing.

She told the Sun: “I still have anxiety and self-doubt. No, not all the time, but a healthy amount is good. I know what I’m doing more now, which is satisfying. There’s definitely moments but that doesn’t permeate through.”
Fans don’t have to worry that anxiety and self doubt means she will be stepping away from the stage, as she confirmed to the publication that she hopes to still be performing when she is 80. This is because, for Kylie, the stage is a place where she can “harness everything”, including her anxieties, and be more “expressive”.
Kylie’s honesty about mental health, and her romances, feature heavily in her new self-titled documentary with Netflix. She told Good Morning Britain that she wanted to do the documentary precisely because she could be so candid. “It was an opportunity to take a beat, do these extended interviews and have the trust to go there,” the All The Lovers singer said.
As an example of how honest she is in the documentary, Kylie shared that she fled to Paris after splitting from Michael Hutchence, as she couldn’t cope with being in London where they had dated.
She told the cameras: “I didn’t know where to go or what to do. I knew I didn’t want to be in London and I didn’t want to be in Australia, so I went to Paris. I remember having a tiny English to-French dictionary. I didn’t know anyone, but had two numbers on a bit of paper. One of those was a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of mine.
“She lived with a girl called Kat, who is now my oldest, best girlfriend. I moved into her apartment, got a sleeping bag and slept on the sofa. I was feeling heartbroken.”
Kylie dated Michael from 1989 to 1991, and broke down in tears as she talked about the singer, who died in 1997. She said that she felt her was still “with” her, even 30 years after his death and that he changed her life completely.
Speaking about the romance, she said: “We were good together. You go on and live your lives but it was definitely an amazing point in time and I have probably been looking for something like that ever since and I haven’t got it.”
She also explained how she tried desperately the keep the relationship alive before their split, but that it was marred by his touring commitments. “Michael was touring all over the world so it became really hard to see each other,” she explained. “So I would send video messages to him. But it became more and more difficult.”
Eventually the relationship broke down, leaving Kylie bereft. “He was the first in so many ways. And of those firsts was heartbreak. I was devastated,” she says. “He was a rock star which doesn’t just mean that he needs to have many women in his life but he needed to go where he needed to go.”
