A Canadian NRI, Onkar Singh Taggar, has established the Kartar Memorial Hospital in his native village, Taggar, located on the Hoshiarpur-Tanda road in Punjab. This four-storey multispecialty hospital, built in memory of his father, Capt. Kartar Singh, spans six acres of land owned by Onkar Singh and his cousin Paramjit Singh Taggar. The hospital was inaugurated on March 9, 2025.
Vision and Purpose
Onkar Singh described the hospital as a gesture of gratitude and sewa (service) for his community. With the tagline “Corporate facilities at charitable rates — serve mankind, serve God,” the hospital aims to offer high-quality medical care at affordable costs. Profits generated will be reinvested into expanding healthcare services rather than for personal gain.
Facilities and Phased Development
-
Phase 1: The 80-bed facility currently provides outpatient and inpatient services in general surgery, general medicine, dental surgery, physiotherapy, gynecology, and pediatrics. It is staffed by 11 doctors, 30 nurses, and 25 support personnel.
-
Phase 2: Plans include adding orthopedic services and a diagnostic center.
-
Future Expansion: Departments for cardiology and ophthalmology are expected next year. An oncology unit is also planned to address the region’s cancer-related healthcare needs.
Motivation and Background
Initially envisioned as a small primary healthcare center, the project expanded after the success of Onkar Singh’s real estate ventures in Canada. Having settled abroad in 1972 and achieved success in hospitality and real estate, he has supported education and healthcare initiatives in Punjab for over two decades.
Hospital MD Paramveer Jagat emphasized that the focus is on community service rather than profit-making. The hospital reflects a commitment to improving healthcare access for rural communities while maintaining corporate-level standards.
