Broadcaster Lorraine Kelly admits she was ‘too shy’ to ask a famous actor for an autograph after their TV show ‘changed her life’ when she was younger
Lorraine Kelly has opened up about her “worst ever interview” as she struggled to speak on air. The 66-year-old has been a regular on television for more than four decades now.
She first joined TV-am as a Scotland correspondent in 1984, where she covered the Lockerbie bombings in depth. She later joined the station’s Summer Sunday programme before becoming a weekday presenter.
She subsequently joined GMTV and in 2010 launched her synonymous chat show, Lorraine. Over the years Lorraine has interviewed a host of famous faces, but admits one person, who helped “change her life” as a youngster, was a particularly difficult interview to navigate.
Lorraine, who grew up in Glasgow, admits she is a massive fan of the sci-fi series Star Trek. She says she has “many a shelf” in her house dedicated to the 1960s TV show.
Among Lorraine’s collection are autographs from the stars of the show. However there was one who she admits she was “too shy” to ask for when interviewing the actor.
Speaking to Dilly Carter on the Sort Your Life Out Unpacked podcast, Lorraine said: “I’ve got autographs from Bill Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, and I never got Mr Spock’s because I was too shy to ask.
“He was on the show, Leonard Nimoy, who was Mr Spock, who I adored and was my first crush. I loved him so much, and it was the worst interview.
“It was nearly as bad as my interview with Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, because I was so in awe, I sat there going [shudders].”
Lorraine has previously opened up about her time watching Star Trek as a child. Writing on Instagram, she said she would settle down with her father, John and watch the programme.
She said: “I’m rewatching this incredible series and thinking about my late dad. Watched with dad when I was a kid and had SO many questions that he answered with enormous patience.
“Astonishingly released before the moon landings – it changed my life.”
Lorraine was left in shock in January when John died following a fall in his home town of East Kilbride. Paying tribute to John, the ITV star said: “Very sad news. My dad has died.
“I am mourning the man who bought me a telescope when I was five years old, who watched the moon landings with me and taught me to always be curious and interested in everything.
“He was in poor health but it has still been a shock. We will miss you dad.”
