Nalgonda: A man who approached the superintendent of police’s office in Suryapet claiming to be a Maoist leader willing to surrender was found to have fabricated his identity to seek financial assistance under the rehabilitation scheme, police said.

The individual, identified as Peddoju Jagan, claimed he had worked for the banned CPI (Maoist) in Sukma district and had been staying in Nethankal for the past two years.

Police took him into custody for enquiry but found that his name did not figure in the records of CPI (Maoist) members and that he had no criminal history. He was subsequently shifted to the Special Investigation Bureau headquarters in Hyderabad for further verification.

Officials of the Special Investigation Bureau confirmed that his claims were not substantiated and that his details were not found in Maoist records. Police said the man appeared to have posed as a Maoist cadre to claim financial assistance offered by the state government to surrendered extremists. He was counselled and let off.
