Adilabad: A meeting between transgender persons and village sarpanches in Nizamabad district on Thursday led to an agreement to revoke bans imposed on their entry into villages, following recent disputes.

The meeting, convened by district collector Ila Tripathi, brought together transgender representatives, sarpanches and officials to address tensions arising from resolutions passed by some gram panchayats barring their entry and displaying banners to that effect.

The issue followed incidents, including a clash in Mylaram village of Sririkonda mandal, and similar disputes reported elsewhere in the district.

During the meeting, sarpanches alleged that transgender persons visiting villages during events such as housewarmings, marriages and business inaugurations demanded large sums of money and created disturbances when refused. They also claimed that some individuals posing as transgender persons were involved in such incidents.

Transgender representatives said the bans had affected their traditional means of livelihood and hurt their dignity. They also said actions of miscreants impersonating transgender persons were impacting their reputation.

The collector said the welfare department would issue identity cards to ensure proper identification. She advised transgender persons not to insist on large payments and to accept voluntary contributions, while directing sarpanches to withdraw restrictions and remove banners.

Following the discussions, sarpanches agreed to revoke the bans and remove flex boards, while transgender representatives said they would not insist on higher payments and would moderate their approach during social functions.

Officials, including district panchayat officer Srinivas Rao, ACP Prakash Yadav and district welfare officer Padma, attended the meeting.
