VIJAYAWADA: Amid soaring temperatures across Andhra Pradesh, Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta has sanctioned nearly `48 lakh towards welfare measures to protect traffic police personnel working under severe heatwave conditions.
With temperatures in several urban areas ranging between 42°C and 46°C, traffic police personnel have been facing dehydration, fatigue and other heat-related health problems while performing prolonged road duties.
Taking serious note of the situation, the DGP ordered the immediate release of funds from the police department budget for procurement of essential protective equipment for traffic personnel across the state. He stressed that the health and welfare of police personnel on duty were of utmost importance and said there would be no compromise on their safety.
Under the initiative, traffic personnel will be provided UV-protection goggles, white caps, ORS packets, water bottles and face masks to help them cope with the extreme summer heat and vehicular pollution.
A total of 3,192 personnel, including traffic constables, head constables and sub-inspectors deployed at traffic junctions, highways, bus stands and railway station areas, are expected to benefit from the scheme.
The DGP directed all police commissionerates and district superintendents of police to expedite procurement and ensure immediate distribution of the materials.
Traffic personnel welcomed the move, stating that the department had recognised the hardships faced by frontline staff during the peak summer season.
