Board secretary Kalicharan, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan and other officials presented prizes to the winners. Mangai Samhitha, a Class VI student from Siddirameshwaranagar in Kamareddy district, received the first prize in photography and second prize in the speech competition. Another student from the same locality, Sahasra, who is also in Class VI, secured third prize in the essay writing competition.

Samhitha, nine years old said photography had become a regular part of her life over the last three years because of her family’s interest. “I have been pursuing photography for the last three years and often go birdwatching with my father and uncle, who are also interested in photography,” she said.

She uses either a DSLR camera or a mobile phone while taking photographs during these visits and said patience matters the most while photographing birds. “I like wait very quietly and watch the birds before taking pictures,” she said. “Sometimes we leave early in the morning because that is when you can spot more. I feel very happy when I get a clear photo after waiting for a long time.”

Schools from different districts participated in the competitions conducted by the State Biodiversity Board to coincide with International Biodiversity Day. The programme concluded with distribution of prizes to the winners in the three categories.
