Demolition work on the Buffalo Bills‘ old Highmark Stadium is now in full swing, and started on May 1st.

It will be a process that will likely last into 2027, as they have chosen not to use the implode method but instead to take it down piece by piece, starting with the northwest corner and west-end suites. The stadium opened in 1973 and has hosted five decades of Buffalo Bills football.

A new stadium across the way is being built as the NFL focuses on upgraded venues across the board and better fan experiences through modernization. The new Highmark Stadium will cost around $2 billion, putting it on par with the Cleveland Browns‘ new stadium, as well as those of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. The Chicago Bears are looking for a dome in Indiana, but a decision hasn’t quite been reached yet on the details.

It is bittersweet for some of the most loyal fans in the NFL to see their stadium demolished, but the new homes being built will also be capable of hosting other sporting events, which is a major focus of the architectural plans during the planning stages.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter posted a picture on (X) of some of the progress thus far.
