It was in 2002 that Kim established her first connection with Ray J while working as a stylist for Ray J’s sister, Brandy, who is also a singer.

Kim and Ray J created the private video during their vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2003. In 2007, the sex tape was released by Vivid Entertainment under the title Kim Kardashian Superstar.

Kim initially sued Vivid Entertainment because she believed the film’s release invaded her personal space. However, she ultimately agreed to the release as part of a settlement that paid her about 5 million USD. The sex tape was released at the time of the premiere of the show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, which made the family popular and a household name. The tape was stated to be a milestone in Kim and Ray J’s lives as they became popular thereafter.

Ray J accused Kim Kardashian and her family of the leaked sex tape

Despite their split in 2006, Ray J and Kim Kardashian remained in the news for years over the legal feud surrounding the tapes. The infamous continued to grab attention, emerging in public talks and courtroom battles. Ray J blamed the Kardashians for using the tapes to gain fame, maintaining in several interviews that he never leaked them. He also stated that it was the Kardashians who benefited from the deal of the leaked sex tape.

In an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim had claimed that there was unreleased footage from the tape that her then-husband, Kanye West, had gotten back for her, along with the complete hard drive from Ray J. However, Ray J had responded to this in a statement to the Daily Mail and said:

“I’ve sat in the shadows for over 14 years allowing the Kardashians to use my name, to abuse my name, make billions of dollars over a decade and a half talking about a topic I’ve never really spoken about. I have never leaked a sex tape in my life. It has never been a leak. I never had a single one at my house. She’s always had all the tapes in a Nike shoe box under her bed. That’s how it all came about. Once I pitched the idea to her, just playing around a little bit, that’s when she jumped on the idea, talked to her mom and it was out of my hands from there.”

Ray J and Kim Kardashian’s leaked sex tape led to a legal battle

Kim and Ray J drama entered the legal phase in 2025 after Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner sued Ray J for defamation as they claimed that his accusations were damaging their reputation. Ray J soon filed a countersuit alleging that his opponents violated their 6 million USD settlement agreement.

Ray J appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017. In a conversation with co-contestant Stacy Francis, the rapper opened up about his past relationship with Kim. Ray J and the Skims founder met through his sister, Brandy. And Stacy was his sister’s back then, had seen the relationship between the former couple. When Stacy told Ray J that Kim was really in love with him, the rapper refused, calling her a ‘player’. Then he added:

“You don’t really know what happened, though. Put it like this. We were both players. We were both cheaters.”
