Karwar: Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner K Lakshmi Priya has warned of strict legal action against those spreading false and misleading information on social media regarding the “Murina Katte” in Bhatkal.

In a statement, the district administration clarified that the original Katte, where devotees traditionally place offerings connected to temple rituals, has not been disturbed and continues to remain in its original condition.

The administration said that, to avoid inconvenience to the public during the highway expansion works passing through Bhatkal town, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had begun constructing a separate structure with red stones on available government land within the Right of Way (ROW) limits on May 24.

However, the new under construction structure was allegedly vandalised by a group of people on Sunday night. Officials said legal action has already been initiated against those responsible.

Despite this clarification, some anti-social elements were allegedly circulating false claims on social media suggesting that the original Katte had been damaged or removed, officials said.

The Deputy Commissioner appealed to the public not to believe rumours or unverified posts being circulated online and cautioned that action would be taken against those posting or spreading false information.

The demolition of the under construction structure had created tension in Bhatkal following which prohibitory order was imposed till May 27 morning. Four FIRs have been booked and additional forces deployed in the Town.
