Manchester United are closing in on making Atalanta midfielder Ederson their first signing since Michael Carrick became their permanent manager.
United are keen to boost their midfield following the departure of Casemiro and have also been linked with the likes of Matheus Fernandes, Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali.
But it is Ederson who is poised to become Carrick’s first signing, with United widely reported to be close to agreeing a fee in the region of £38million including add-ons.
Ederson is reported by transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano to have already agreed personal terms with United, and a deal could be completed by the end of the week.
The 26-year-old has made 180 appearances for Atalanta since joining from Salernitana in 2022 and helped them to Europa League glory in 2024. He has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in his time with Atalanta.
He was left out of Atalanta’s Serie A finale against Fiorentina, with coach Raffaele Palladino making no attempt to hide that the decision was related to his impending move to United.
“It was a choice agreed with the player because there is something happening on the transfer market,” Palladino told a post-match press conference.
“The fact that a player like him is being followed by such an important club should be a source of pride.”
Ederson has won three caps for Brazil but was not selected in their squad for the 2026 World Cup.
