Tirupati: As thousands of pilgrims and travellers continue to arrive in Tirupati owing to summer holidays for educational institutions, the district’s Health department is readying to deal with the potential Ebola threat, even though no case of the disease has yet been reported in AP. Authorities have begun strengthening surveillance in coordination with the airport authorities to ensure early detection of any suspected case among passengers arriving from countries affected by the Ebola outbreak in various parts of Africa.
Officials maintain that despite the absence of direct international flights into Tirupati, international travellers could reach the temple city through domestic transit routes. District medical and health officer Dr V. Balakrishna Naik and Tirupati International Airport director D. Boominathan and other officials have reviewed preparedness in this regard. To strengthen the emergency Ebola response capacity, Tirupati district administration has created a specialised Ebola isolation facility at S.V.R. Ruia government general hospital in Tirupati.
There is a dedicated ambulance in case any patient who is suspected of carrying Ebola arrives. The persons will be directly shifted to Ruia hospital from the airport. Ruia hospital superintendent Dr B. Manohar said their facility includes personal protective equipment, oxygen support systems, ventilators, and separate treatment rooms. The superintendent said assistant professor Dr C. Ramesh Kumar has been appointed as a nodal officer for the facility.
“Doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff are being trained in infection-control procedures, patient management, and emergency response protocols related to Ebola. Awareness instructions and precautionary guidelines are also being circulated among healthcare officials across the district,” Dr Manohar maintained.
Doctors say Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids of infected persons. Fever, body pain, headache, vomiting, and diarrhoea are among the early symptoms, while severe cases can lead to bleeding and organ failure. District officials stressed that measures being taken by them against Ebola are purely precautionary. They indicate the district’s readiness in case any Ebola suspected case is detected.
