The TV and radio host, 39, host has opened up about the behind-the-scenes pressure of her industry – and revealed even the biggest pop stars are secretly wearing fake designer goods
This Morning presenter Sian Welby has opened up about the “intense” pressure she feels to maintain her glamorous appearance on screen, admitting she has has struggled to “keep up” with fellow broadcasters including Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts.
The 39-year-old, who joined Heart Radio at the start of her career before going on to host Capital Breakfast and This Morning, also warned fans against blowing their budget on designer clothes and accessories – especially as some of the biggest pop stars she has interviewed confessed to wearing fakes.
“When I first got into radio, I felt a bit like, oh god. It was all broadcast – it wasn’t like the old days where it was just hoodie and pyjamas or whatever,” she said.
Sian added that watching her immaculately-dressed colleagues on air every day left her feeling like she couldn’t compete. “You had people like Amanda Holden with incredible outfits every day, or Ashley Roberts,” she continued. “They are so effortless, they do it so well. They just nail it.
“But I knew that that was almost too intense for me to try and keep up with that. So I made a decision [to] not have that added stress. I need to be able to come to work in my jeans, my jumpers, you know, still look smart, but I couldn’t bear the thought of having to prep maybe a week’s worth of looks. That would be too much for me.”
She also had a warning for fans tempted to splash out to keep up with their favourite stars.
“Please don’t get yourself in a mess trying to keep up with designer handbags and trainers and whatever,” she said. “If you’re trying to keep up with something that financially you cannot do, I think you’ve got to see that as an alarm bell. I feel sad if you are stuck in that loop. Because people do. I know people that have.”
She added that celebrities’ designer outfits aren’t even always what they seem. “Even the biggest pop stars have told me, ‘Oh, this watch isn’t real. Oh, this bag’s not real.’ The illusion to their followers would be: of course that’s the real deal.”
Speaking on the Talk In Wardrobe podcast, Sian admitted she was a fan of vintage bargains on eBay or Vinted, or turning to high street alternatives. “So many brands like M&S actually do so many similar vibes of stuff that’s high-end designer,” she said.
The star, who shares daughter Ruby – two next month – with her radio producer fiance Jake Beckett, said motherhood has also made her more alert to new style pressures.
“I definitely don’t want to get into the ‘now I need to dress for the school run’ vibe,” she said. “That can be as competitive as a runway.” But she was equally clear she has no plans to lose herself in the process. “I don’t want to just suddenly go, ‘Oh, I don’t follow trends anymore, I’m a mum.'”
