King Charles’ long-time kilt-clad equerry, who has gained a legion of fans, has shared surprise baby news.

It has been revealed that Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson and wife Olivia, welcomed a daughter last week. The couple married last year in a low key ceremony after being described by friends as “well-matched and very happy”.

The equerry was previously married to former wife Caroline and they have a son together but they split several years ago before finding love with PR executive, Olivia. She is the daughter of former communications secretary to the late Queen, Simon Lewis. And in a birth announcement, it was revealed that the equerry and his new wife welcomed a little girl called Theodora.

The announcement, published in The Times, said: “THOMPSON on 20th May 2026 to Olivia (née Lewis) and Lieutenant Colonel Jonny, a daughter, Theodora.”

Soldier Jonny is from the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland and is often seen wearing a traditional kilt while out on duty with the King.

Equerries are drawn from the armed forces and are required to assist the royals both inside their residences and when out and about on public engagements.

He has been at the King’s side ever since his reign began and played a prominent role at the late Queen’s funeral, the Coronation and also won over a new sets of fans when he accompanied Charles and Camilla to the US last month for their state visit and meeting with Donald Trump.

He was also seen sitting behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at a service to mark the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and also welcomed former Prime Minister and current PM Rishi Sunak as he visited Buckingham Palace to see the King.

While two weeks ago, he was seen sharing a joke with Lady Louise Windsor as he accompanied the King at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Not only has he earned fans online, but also gained the attention of society bible Tatler magazine, which praised his ability to “look as good in a suit as he goes in a kilt.”

It explained: “It is from within the palace walls that the King’s equerry wields his unique brand of quiet, charming power; but he’s spotted where it counts, at the coronation, or on the opening night of the Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery in Fitzrovia, for example, to which he wore a bunny tie and charmed India Rose James.”

As well as Lieutenant Commander Will Thornton, the King can also call on deputies Captain Hugh Scrope, 27, of the Coldstream Guards and the first ever female equerry to the sovereign Captain Kat Anderson.
