Luka Modric is expected to make a decision on his future after Croatia’s World Cup campaign this summer, with growing uncertainty over whether the veteran midfielder will continue playing beyond the tournament.
The 40-year-old endured a frustrating end to the season with AC Milan, who missed out on Champions League qualification after defeat by Cagliari at San Siro.
Modric made 35 appearances in all competitions during his first season in Italy, scoring twice and providing three assists as Milan remained in contention for a top-four finish for much of the campaign.
However, the Croatian suffered a fractured cheekbone in a match against Juventus last month and his absence coincided with a poor run of form which ultimately saw Milan drop into the Europa League places.
Despite the disappointing finish, Modric quickly became a popular figure among supporters because of his performances and professionalism throughout the season.
The former Real Madrid midfielder also donated his 2018 Ballon d’Or to Milan, allowing the club to display the award in its museum.
World Cup Modric’s final bow?
Modric, who turns 41 in September, has previously stated his desire to continue representing Croatia and is expected to feature at the World Cup in North America, which begins on 11 June.
His long-term future beyond the tournament remains unclear, although Real Madrid are believed to be open to welcoming him back in a non-playing role whenever he decides to retire.
Club president Florentino Perez reportedly assured Modric during his farewell ceremony last year that he would always have a place at the Bernabeu.
Modric spent 13 seasons at Madrid, winning six Champions League titles and becoming one of the club’s most decorated players. He remains a hugely respected figure in the Spanish capital and has been linked with potential future roles within the club’s sporting structure.
